2016 was a big year in African music consumption. MyNotjustok recorded over 60 million individual downloads in 2016 and we not only saw an increase in Download counts, but also a massive increase in East African music consumption.
Kiss Daniel dominated 2016 with Mama at 1.8 million downloads, Tekno‘s Pana which dominated the latter part of 2016 closed the year out with 1.7 million downloads, while Diamond Platnumz who is arguably the biggest artist in East Africa sits comfortably at #5 with 950k downloads with his Kidogo single featuring P-Square.
All these Downloads were FREE and this is an indication of the massive growth in African Music consumption globally. For an industry that pretty much started growing online in 2006 (when Notjustok was founded), African music has spread FAST in this current FREE format which may no longer be sustainable, but we are optimistic that majority of the numbers NOTJUSTOK will reveal at the end of 2017 will be monetized and convert to cash for the artists. Its time for CHANGE!
